The Sinking City 2 Talents, Crafting & Dream Essence Explained
Calvin’s progression runs through Talents, unlocked with Dream Essence — a resource the game hands out sparingly for story progress and closed investigations. Since the What Dreams Are Made Of achievement wants every Talent, Essence routing matters from Chapter 1.
Earning Dream Essence
Verified sources so far:
- Story progression — chapter beats award Essence on a fixed track.
- Side investigations — most of the eight optional cases pay Essence on completion.
- The Cursed Press (Chapter 2) — choosing the silver outcome pays 2 Dream Essence, versus a shotgun accessory for gold. Take silver unless you’re speedrunning; it’s among the largest single Essence payouts in the early game. Solution here.
The Essence connection to the Great Old Ones and the Dreamlands is a lore thread the game develops — the characters & lore page picks it up without spoilers.
What to Unlock First
The tree rewards economy over firepower early:
- Pack/inventory upgrades — scarcity of carry space is the game’s real difficulty.
- Crafting efficiency — more ammo per component directly extends every expedition.
- Investigation aids — quality-of-life for clue work.
- Combat talents last — weak-point discipline (see enemies) outperforms raw damage talents at every stage we’ve tested.
Crafting Basics
Crafting happens at Safe Rooms from scavenged components. The economy is closed: components become ammo or healing, and both compete with your pack space on the way home. Rules of thumb:
- Craft pistol ammo in bulk, shells only to maintain a small reserve.
- Keep at least two heals banked before any new district.
- Components respawn nowhere — scarcity is real, which is why Essence-funded crafting talents compound over a run.
Eldritch Points & Sanity
Alongside Essence, the game tracks Calvin’s exposure to the impossible. Extended time near eldritch phenomena distorts perception — treat visual warping as a resource warning the same way you’d treat low health. Full mechanics documentation is still being verified post-launch and this page will expand with exact numbers as they’re confirmed.
